POSITION TITLE: General Laborer
EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Grounds, Maintenance, or Custodial Supervisors
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Temporary/Summer only
Primary Purpose
Perform general maintenance and repair of building structures and mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems.
Assist with grounds maintenance.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
High school diploma or GED, preferred
Valid Texas driver’s license
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to operate hand and power tools
Ability to work independently
Experience
One year experience in general building maintenance with clear driving record
Major Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repair
- Assist skilled workers with repair and maintenance, including woodwork; replacing electrical switches, fixtures, and motors; painting; replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems; and replacing glass.
- Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds and perform maintenance repairs.
- Detect and report major repairs on structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment.
- Complete repairs as requested on work orders or by supervisor.
- Assist with mowing and detailing of district grounds.
- Assist with relocation of furnishings, such as desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, etc.
- Move, install, assemble, and repair all school furniture and playground equipment as needed.
- Hang pictures, mirrors, chalkboards, marker boards, bulletin boards, projection screens, towel dispensers, soap dispensers, and other items as required.
- Install ceiling and flooring materials.
- Operate light truck to transport furniture, equipment and supplies and materials throughout district.
- Maintain tools and equipment and perform preventive maintenance as required.
- Work irregular hours

- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and immediately report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor.

- Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
- Environment: Work outside and inside; on slippery or uneven surfaces; on ladders and scaffolding; around machinery and moving parts; exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, fumes, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration; frequent districtwide travel; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours
