POSITION TITLE: Plumber Apprentice

 

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-Exempt

 

REPORTS TO: Master Plumber Foreman

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months

 

HOURLY SALARY RANGE:  Minimum $13.19, Midpoint $16.48, Maximum $19.78

 

 

Primary Purpose:

 

Under general supervision, maintain the flow and drainage of water, air, and other gases by assembling, installing and repairing pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures.  Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all plumbing systems in district facilities.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification

High school diploma or GED

Valid Texas driver’s license

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of plumbing repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques

Knowledge of plumbing codes

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material

Ability to perform mathematical calculations

Ability to diagnose and resolve problems

Ability to use hand and power tools

Ability to obtain Plumber license

 

Experience:

One year experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience; clear driving record

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Maintenance and Repair

  • Assemble, install, maintain, and pressure test all pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, drainage, sprinkler, and gas systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Determine sources of plumbing malfunctions and complete repairs as indicated or according to work orders.
  • Install and repair pipes, fittings, valves, fixtures, and plumbing system equipment, including sinks, commodes, water heaters, water softeners, etc.
  • Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment following established inspection procedures.
  • Receive and complete work orders.
  • Repair dishwashers and kitchen equipment that incorporate gas or water consumption.
  • Select materials and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Work irregular hours and respond to emergency calls, as needed.

 

Records and Inventory

  • Maintain accurate records on materials used, labor, and production.
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.

 

Safety

  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and immediately report conditions that are not correctable to supervisor.

 

Professional Growth

  • Participate in professional learning programs, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.

 

Communication

  • Work with principals, administrators, and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Articulate the district’s mission and goals to the community and solicit community support.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Hand tools, power tools, pipe bender, propane torch, welding equipment, sewer rooter; heavy equipment including forklift, trencher, backhoe, light, district vehicle
  • Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and tight and enclosed spaces
  • Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive hand motions, wrist flexion/extension, grasping/squeezing, overhead reaching; frequent driving
  • Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
  • Environment: Work outside and inside, near electrical power lines and gas lines, on slippery or uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts; exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, fumes, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; frequent districtwide travel; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions
