POSITION TITLE: General Education Router

 

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt

 

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months

 

Primary Purpose

 

Maintain bus routes for the general education program, special needs program, and co-curricular activities.

 

Qualifications

 

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or GED

Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with all school bus driving endorsements

Bus Driver Certification

Must pass pre-employment annual state requirement physical examination 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills

 

Must be 18 years of age

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to operate bus

Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior

Effective communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills

Proficient computer skills to develop spreadsheets, databases, and perform word processing

Proficient use of radio communications

 

Experience

Two years related experience or training, including logistics planning and data analysis

Bus driving experience with three years of clear driving record, preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

 

Routing Program

  • Maintain and operate bus routing software.
  • Prepare data needed to plan bus routes; prepare and update district maps showing areas served by each bus and maintain and post an accurate route schedule.
  • Develop route assignments and communicate to bus drivers, including floating drivers.
  • Notify drivers of changes, including but not limited to: address, pick-up and drop-off location, time, and bus number.
  • Assist campuses in placing new students on bus routes and advise drivers of new or dismissed students.
  • Assist with special education bus routes and ensure that drivers maintain a route folder with accurate descriptions of their morning and afternoon routes.
  • Responsible for all co-curricular travel to and from campuses and facilities
  • Serve as a bus driver or monitor, and perform other duties as needed.

Clerical Duties

  • Ensure community relationships and partnerships with oversight of all contractual agreements of transporting different organizations.
  • Assist the director in financial planning, executing, and budgeting as needed.

Communication

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information, employee information, and District matters.
  • Communicate information verbally and in writing, via telephone, radio, email, schedules, and memos.
  • Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in professional learning activities related to assigned duties, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Keep informed of laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and innovative practices related to the school transportation program.
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer, peripherals, and telephone; two-way radio; school bus and vehicles; safety equipment, such as flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing, reaching, climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting/crouching, crawling, pushing/pulling, twisting, reaching; prolonged sitting
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand and arm motions, keyboarding, use of mouse, wrist flexion/extension
  • Vision: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
  • Environment: Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and in bus or vehicle; regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, hot and cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals; frequent in-district travel; occasional statewide travel; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours
