Primary Purpose:
Implement comprehensive program of health services on assigned campuses. Provide, maintain, and improve the health of students to eliminate health related barriers that interfere with learning.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification
Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
Associate in Applied Science accepted
Valid Registered Nurse license from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners
Current CPR certification
Proof of immunization against Hepatitis B Virus
RN preferred; Minimum qualifications LVN
Special Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects
Knowledge of public school health issues
Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills
Ability to implement policies and procedures
Experience:
Two years nursing experience in pediatric or public health
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Nursing Services
- Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, nursing process, and school health protocols.
- Serve as health advocate for students, faculty, and staff of assigned campuses.
- Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases, if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached.
- Coordinate management system to enforce procedures for the administration, safety, and security of medications, first aid or health supplies, and equipment.
- Assist in control of communicable diseases by interpreting the policies and procedures for control of communicable disease within the school.
- Implement and comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy in the area of health services.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.
- Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
- Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
- Plan and implement health assessment and screening programs and make referrals as necessary.
- Coordinate referrals to health care professionals for medical diagnostic services and treatment as needed.
- Consult with staff on student health problems and provide assistance with individual cases as needed.
- Provide relevant counseling and guidance to students and parents so they may assume responsibility for maintenance of student health.

Instruction
- Participate in the implementation of the health education curriculum.
- Coordinate health service activities with the instructional program on assigned campus.
Communication and Community Relations
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
- Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
- Assist families in the use of community resources for health-related needs.
- Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of health care services to the community and solicit support in realizing the mission.

- Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment and participate in professional learning.
- Maintain familiarity with district initiatives to better serve the needs of the students.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
- Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
- Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
- Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students
- Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
