TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months
Primary Purpose
Supervise the daily activities of vehicle repair and maintenance operation to ensure proper performance and safety of all district vehicles.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with all school bus driving endorsements
Bus Driver Certification
Texas Vehicle Safety Inspector Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills
Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance
Ability to operate vehicle repair equipment and tools
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Ability to supervise personnel and coordinate shop operations
Ability to use personal computer and software
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
Ability to operate bus
Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions
Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior
Experience
Five years’ experience in vehicle repair and maintenance procedures; two years supervisory experience; three years with clear driving record
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance, Repair and Inspection
- Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
- Rebuild, replace, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories.
- Assign priority and process vehicle repair work orders, evaluate and recommend repairs and provide cost estimates, and assign repairs to personnel and oversee completion.
- Arrange contract repairs when work cannot be performed in shop.
- Assign or perform welding and minor body work to keep vehicles operating.
- Establish preventive maintenance and care schedules and perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
- Discuss mechanical problems with other mechanics and assist in solving repair problems.
- Inspect work performed by mechanics in overhaul and repair of automotive equipment.
- Maintain records on parts used, labor time, and cost of each repair job; and review and approve completed work orders.
- Perform state safety inspections for all district vehicles.
- Assist in preparation of department budget.
Personnel Management
- Assist in recruiting, screening, training, and evaluating shop employees and in training new drivers in the mechanics of vehicles.
- Supervise washing crew in cleaning buses.
Inventory and Equipment
- Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
- Order equipment and supplies, recommend replacement of equipment, and maintain accurate records.
- Conduct annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies.
- Direct the upkeep and appearance of shop and parking lot areas.
- Load and unload tapes for video monitoring system.
Vehicle Operation
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
- Report accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures and complete required reports.
- Maintain records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
Student Management
- Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street, and ensure that all students are off the bus at the end of the route or trip.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
- Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
Safety
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as: first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
Communication
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.
Professional Growth and Development
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of diesel mechanics and mechanic.

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repair equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack and lift equipment; school bus and vehicles; safety equipment such as flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher; two-way radio
