POSITION TITLE: Shop Supervisor
EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months
Primary Purpose
The Transportation Shop Supervisor is responsible for onsite supervision of repairs, rebuilds, preventative maintenance and operations of the transportation maintenance facility including all shop personnel.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with all school bus driving endorsements
Bus Driver Certification or compete certification within 90 days of employment
Texas Vehicle Safety Inspector Certification
Deisel Mechanic Certification or equivalent
Special Knowledge/Skills
Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance
Ability to operate vehicle repair equipment and tools
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Ability to supervise personnel and coordinate shop operations
Ability to use personal computer and software
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
Ability to operate bus
Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions
Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior
Knowledge of Federal and State School Bus Specifications
Experience
Seven years’ experience in vehicle repair and maintenance procedures; two years supervisory experience; three years with clear driving record
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance, Repair and Inspection
- Supervise the shop, the major and minor mechanical repairs, and the preventative maintenance of buses and other district vehicles.
- Supervise, the rebuild, replacement, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories.
- Arrange contract repairs when work cannot be performed in the shop.
- Perform major and minor mechanical repairs on and preventative maintenance on buses and other district vehicles.
- Supervise preventive maintenance and care schedules and perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
- Inspect work performed by mechanics in overhaul and repair of automotive equipment.
- Oversee records on parts used, labor time, and cost of each repair job; and review and approve completed work orders.
- Assist the Director in preparing and maintaining shop budget.
Personnel Management
- Assist Director in recruiting, screening, training, and evaluating shop employees and in training new drivers in the mechanics of vehicles.
- Supervise shop employees.
Inventory and Equipment
- Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
- Order equipment and supplies, recommend replacement of equipment, and maintain accurate records.
- Conduct annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies.
- Oversee the upkeep and appearance of shop and parking lot areas.
Vehicle Operation
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
- Report accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures and complete required reports.
- Maintain records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
Safety
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as: first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
Communication
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.
Professional Growth and Development
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of Service Manager.

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repair equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack and lift equipment; school bus and vehicles; safety equipment such as flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher; two-way radio
